Moshun and similar 'animated fonts'

Via the plural blog is Moshun, an "animated font" by Calango. Creator Jeroen Krielaars says:

"Every animated character is on it's own shapelayer in Adobe After Effects. Therefore every character has to be positioned by hand. But since this font is suited for short stuff, instead of bodytext, it's still fairly quick to set up."

Screenfonts: movie typography + Making of a 'Hello Brooklyn' video

Motionworks tweeted about Screenfonts (from The Font Feed), a monthly commentary on the use of fonts in movie poster design, music video and more.

It's a welcome addition to other observed efforts, including various Topher Welsh roundups of motion type on AETuts, the Motion Design Love series Nice Type Tuesday, the Typography Gallery at Motionspire, and Type Tuesday by Brad Chmielewski. See also Four techniques for combining fonts + type videos.

In a recent post on a video made to a remix of Jay-Z’s Hello Brooklyn, Screenfonts author Yves Peters noted that beyond the background on the precursor to Helvetica:

"What’s really interesting is that the author of the music promo also posted a Making Of… video, showing how still images were treated with the Vanishing Point feature in Adobe Photoshop, and Adobe After Effects, to create the illusion of motion and depth. The end result is very impressive."

Useful details about CS5 fonts

Typblography, an Adobe blog on type, posted Useful Details About Creative Suite 5 (CS5) Fonts. CS5 includes a number of new fonts, and eliminates 3 fonts that were part of the CS4 font set: Bell Gothic Std Black, Bell Gothic Std Bold, and Eccentric Std.

Also, some products in CS5 will install a basic font set while other products will install an additional font sets, some of which have to be manually selected in the installation.

Update: Sarthak from the Fireworks team takes another approach in Default Fonts and CS5 release.

Four techniques for combining fonts + type videos

Via @daleBradshaw is Four Ways to Mix Fonts from Ask H&FJ, which at base says "keep one thing consistent, and let one thing vary" before explaining their 4 approaches:
  1. Use a palette with wit -- use typefaces with complimentary moods to evoke an energetic air
  2. Use a palette with energy -- mix typefaces from the same historical period whose families have different features
  3. Use a palette with poise -- mix typefaces with similar line quality if they offer different textures
  4. Use a palette with dignity -- mix typefaces with similar proportions and give each a different role
Also, check out Choosing Fonts for Annual Reports again from Ask H&FJ.

Free online font generators: YourFonts + FontStruct

via Motion Graphics 'n Such...

YourFonts.com is a free online font generator that lets you make an OpenType font (Mac, Win, Linux) from your own handwriting. Fonts generated by YourFonts.com can be further improved with the associated High-Logic FontCreator.

Update: There's also, FontStruct, a free font-building tool by FontShop that lets you create fonts constructed out of geometrical shapes arranged in a grid pattern, like tiles or bricks. FontStruct then generates TrueType fonts for Mac or Windows.

Update 2: via Make Better Media is Flipping Typical, a possibly useful website that shows a phrase of your choosing in the popular typefaces you have on your computer.

The Ecofont uses up to 20% less ink

The Ecofont is a new Dutch sans-serif font with holes that uses up to 20% less ink. Based on Verdana, it's free to download and use. The results vary but the Ecofont works best when using font size 9 or 10, which has the look of draft quality.

The Ecofont is developed by SPRANQ, based on a hunch of Colin Willems, which ideas for other savings:

• End-users: print only when necessary, use a modern, efficient printer and use unbleached paper.
• Graphic designers: use modern color separation techniques to avoid unnecessary wastage in ink. In paper choice, take the environment into account.
• (Offset) printers: avoid modern laser techniques that make ink indivisible from the paper. Keep an eye on innovations, such as plant-based ink.
• Printer manufacturers: invest in environment-conscious innovation.

CS3 fonts not in CS4

Thomas Phinney, Adobe's Product Manager for Fonts & Global Typography, listed fonts included in CS4 and noted that some CS3 fonts are not in CS4. While this only effects new installs, it could still bite people expecting to see certain fonts in any circumstance. He says:

"Typefaces you might have seen in CS3 that aren't in CS4: Arno Pro, Bickham Script Pro, Garamond Premier Pro. Further typefaces bundled with InDesign CS3 but not InDesign CS4: Bernhard Modern Std, Caflisch Script Pro."

Care might be warranted in some cases; for example Garamond Premier Pro is now selling for $199.

Saul Bass website and 'Hitchcock' font

via the AE-List, starting with a Bass-like version of a Star Wars title sequence...

Saul Bass, famous for design and film titles, is still a source of inspiration. Typographica notes resources and Bass-inspired fonts, including for the Hitchcock font, at Saul Bass Website and “Hitchcock” Font Are Back.

Font resources

Alan Shisko mentioned a font thread from the AE list and a Macworld article that "neatly summarizes all the free and commercial font sites, plus links to font resources. Confirms my theory that DaFont is the first (and often only) place to go for typographic styles and inspiration."

Trish and Chris Meyer also covered fonts at CyberMotion. AE Portal may have additional items, well at least one, with Famous Fonts. I also liked another site mentioned in that AE list thread, Blue Vertigo which features links to color tools, sounds, icons, patterns and more.
