Solars storms & the power grid
Sun Storm, an episode of the Curiosity series on Discovery TV premiered Sunday, December 30, 2012. The full episode should eventually be online, but it's worth catching it now if you can. The particle effects are nice, but no background info was available from producer Big Wave Productions.
In addition to introducing the science of the sun, the show discusses how "a massive solar super-storm could knock out the power grid for weeks or even many months, destroying the technology that powers our civilization, from communications to banking to our water supply." Food supplies could be effected quickly, and in a massive way too. It appears our definitions of security could use revamping, and our forces redeployed in part.
A society with this much talent should move away from Brittle Power (noted decades ago by Amory Lovins) to more resilient systems. Even established economists are slowly coming around; see for example Antifragile: Things That Gain From Disorder by Nassim Nicholas Taleb, and the World Economic Forum’s Global Risks 2013 (noted by @resilienceSci). Creating snow in After Effects redux
Creating snow in After Effects has been updated on PVC.
You can use dedicated snow filters or particle systems to create snow that can be either stylized or realistic. There's filters built into After Effects like CC Snow, CC Particle World, and Particle Playground -- or you can use 3rd-party filters like Trapcode Particular (which is AE 3D camera-aware), Boris FX Snow, Cycore FX HD Snowfall, DigiEffects Delirium Snow, and GenArts Monsters GT.

If you want to test Premiere v. FCP X fairly using last year's iMac (using GPU blurs on each), enable GPU rendering as seen in the video by Kanen Flowers, Mercury Playback on a 27″ iMac with AMD Radeon 6970M (Premiere Pro CS6). You may even skip that process and just take out the GPU supported cards list before starting Premiere.

In one's life, you're better off following the teachings of Moses, Jesus, or Buddha to gain long-term happiness. But the sad fact is, many people live by a very different set of rules, and while most of these folks eventually self-destruct, they can inflict severe damage on our personal and professional lives in the process.
48 Rules of Power is a good primer for learning how these people think. I've spotted a number of similar books in the Business section (like "Career Warfare" and classics like the "Art of War") of my local bookseller, but none put things quite as succinctly as this one. In today's predatory work culture, with good jobs (read: jobs that let you own a home and pay all the bills month to month with a little left over) becoming harder and harder to find, you almost certainly will be the target of these techniques at some point.
A friend once made an innocent and extraordinarily minor faux pas at an office Christmas party, and had a homicidal CEO attempt to destroy his future using methods as varied as slander and identity theft, all done through middle manager proxies to keep his own hands clean. You need to read books like these to know how too many people at the top think. But don't live out some of these rules in real life (e.g., crush your enemy completely) - there'll always be someone who does it better, and you will get crushed. Martha Stewart got hers, so don't think you're going to smash people and live to tell the tale. Reality simply doesn't work that way - and even if you survive professionally, the spiritual rot and personal decay will leave you an isolated, paranoid wreck.
Read this book in the spirit of C.S. Lewis' The Screwtape Letters, in which a master demon gives advice to a protege on how to destroy mortals. Learn how to spot people who live like this - and then stay very, very far away. Jesus said, "Be wise as serpents but innocent as doves." This book, read in the right spirit, will help you with both.

Set Matte: a 32-bpc node for After Effects
Many people don’t know the Set Matte effect plug-in exists, maybe because it officially exists only to provide compatibility with earlier projects. That seems to have changed though, since Set Matte was upgraded to support 32-bpc color depth in After Effects CS6.

Volumetric lighting in After Effects
...is a new survey at PVC.
Volumetric lighting, Crepuscular rays, God rays, and the like are visible rays or even globes of light. You can't see lights themselves with the built-in lighting in After Effects (for background see Cameras, lights, and points of interest), so plug-ins are used to help make light visible.
One of the first published examples of volumetric lighting in AE used the Radial Blur (Zoom) plug-in, and was presented by Sam DeWitt in a 1995 issue of DV Full Motion. Later tutorials are quite numerous, though they leverage newer filter effects like CC Light Burst, CC Light Rays, CC Radial Blur, CC Radial Fast Blur, Trapcode Shine (with a unique shimmer control), or similar.

Element 3D: new AE plug-in [updated]
Video Copilot has released Element 3D,
an After Effects plug-in (originally 'Atom') that lets you import and animate 3D models,
even as a particle array, and extrude text and mask shapes in real time.
It’s for all of us, for hi & low end, for straight 3D and more abstract experimentation
alike, at least if you have a more recent OpenGL graphics card.

Creating Fire in After Effects

One item mentioned is by Video Copilot, who posted an effective campfire or torch-like flame in a free fire project for After Effects:
"Here is a little test I made using CC Particle World and some vector blur to make Fire. It’s not perfect but an interesting study. One of the key things I did was used a wiggle expression on the particle birthrate to give a variable emission pattern like something was burning inconsistently. It’s a little slow to render but it is very high resolution."

The Shatter Effect in AE

Jacob’s Ladder, Brazil, Donnie Darko: same idea?
Several popular films seem to share a common influence, in a certain way at least. Cineleet uses plot *spoilers* to explain how Carnival of Souls, Jacob’s Ladder, Brazil, Donnie Darko, Stay, and other Films were Inspired by 'An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge', a short story by Ambrose Bierce originally printed in William Randolph Hearst's The San Francisco Examiner in 1890.
The Wikipedia entry for the story lists other more direct and indirect adaptations, including one from Alfred Hitchcock Presents. The adaptation below by director Robert Enrico won the 1963 Academy Award for Best Live Action Short, and appeared as one of the last episodes of The Twilight Zone in 1964.

The Global Performance Cache, group of time-saving technologies consisting of a global RAM cache, a persistent disk cache, and a new graphics pipeline (along with the Cache Work Area In Background command), is considered the best new feature of After Effects CS6. The cost of ownership of Production Premium is about the same at $1899/$375 upgrade, and the Cloud service master collection is $50/30 per month by year ($600/$360), or a la carte per app ($20/month for AE); see pricing and a summary of details at ProDesignTools.
The ship date for CS6 will be announced later. In the meantime, there are some additional video demos from Adobe collected in More forays into Production Premium CS6 at PVC.

Here’s another summary of the last few weeks or so of news on After Effects— this time CS6 dominates, but there were still new scripts and a plug-in, and assorted tutorials.
AEMap from AE Scripts "creates equirectangular projection maps with 286 separate countries (masks on solids) under 177 jurisdictions (pre-comps). It comes with the 'AEMap Utilities' which contains tools for dealing with a bunch of layers and nested comps." The elements are "continuously rasterized" so they may work in CS6 extrusion and ray-tracing.
cm_Barndoors, new from AE Scripts, lets you "apply a set of barndoors to existing lights, or create a new light with barndoors attached. Each set of barndoors gets a Grip layer that gives you control over each barndoor’s rotation, the entire barndoor assembly rotation and the softness of the barndoor shadows."
Dark Energy for Adobe After Effects is a new Windows-only plug-in that features de-noise and film simulation modules for images up to 1920×1080. It's sold now at a pre-release pricing. Some of these features, leveraged using Nvidia GPUs, are available in the plug-in:
Paul Conigliaro posted Kill AE, an extension for Alfred app users on OS X; it's similar to other utilities like AE Suicide-After Effects Crash Recovery, ToeJam, and the OS X Terminal method described by Mark Christiansen that saves the project even when AE is frozen.
James Zanoni shows background and multiple machine rendering with AERender, droplet for OS X, in Terminal (command line on the Mac) in After Effects. In reality, that droplet just uses aerender, the executable program in the same folder as the After Effects app that has a command-line interface with which you can automate rendering. You can find details in Automating rendering with aerender in AE Help, and in Background rendering with After Effects . Trent Armstrong posted an article called Auto-Typing for Expressions, which discusses how he uses auto-typing apps to store and access commonly used expressions. In an article at .net.com, Kinetic typography techniqueswith After Effects, Angie Taylor shows how to use Photoshop and Adobe After Effects for kinetic typography - combining text and motion to express ideas in the form of animation. Creative Suite 6 up to launch
Adobe has announced almost all of CS6 Production Premium (except for Illustrator), and there's a boatload of previews and other resources on the product reveal page for NAB. The full story will be unveiled on Monday April 23 at the Adobe Creative Cloud and Creative Suite 6 Launch.
As usual, Todd Kopriva has detailed "what’s new and changed" for the CS6 versions of After Effects (Global Performance Cache, 3D Camera Tracker, ray-traced extruded text and shapes, variable-width mask feather, new Cycore (CC) effects + more) and Premiere (revised UI & trimming, OpenCL, monitoring, extended multi-cam + more). Colin Stefani did the same for Audition. Photoshop CS6 resources were covered earlier in Photoshop CS6: public beta resources.

Nvidia posted a cluster of web pages and demo movies on CS6 acceleration. They want to sell the better graphics cards, but like CUDA and Premiere (which added support for certain OpenCL cards on the Mac), After Effects lets you edit the ray-trace supported preference file to test unsupported setups. Another source of acceleration could be Fusion ioFX, a PCI-type card that extends RAM instead of speeding the disk subsystem like SSD, which could complement AE's new cache system [as could Intel’s SSD 910; see Finally a PCIe SSD from Intel]. In another development, former AE product manager Michael Coleman @motiongfx (now product manager for Video Editing Workflows) is working on a new product or feature which was demoed at NAB: "Our collaborative editing demo shows two people in two cities editing the same 1080p footage without proxies file transfers." See also Levels Beyond Extends Functionality of its Reach Engine Solution with Adobe Premiere Pro Software for Highly Efficient Content Management on a plug-in, called Reach Engine Access, is compatible with Premiere CS5.5 and CS6.

Peter Salvia and Steve Crouch introduce SpeedGrade CS6 in FCProse Ep6 - FCP to SpeedGrade via Premiere CS6 (from Red Scarlet at 4K, transcoded to ProRes LT and cut in FCP 7, to conforming to native RAW .R3D material inside of SpeedGrade CS6 for a full 4K DI finish). Touchable Movies: QuickTime's revenge?
Fast Company notes an experiment by BERG, explained in Swiping through cinema, touching through glass. Maybe it's finally time now for the ideas on using movie frames as a visual database that were demonstrated on the QuickTime 1.0 Developer Disc and implemented partially in QuickTime VR.
