Adam Wilt's P2 Purge utility

DV maestro Adam Wilt of ProVideoCoalition's Camera Log shared his utility on the SF Cutters list:

Question: "Once the P2 files are imported into FCP, is there a way to quickly delete the original P2 files (.mvx, or whatever they are) without having to unlock each one individually?"

Answer: "I have an Applescript droplet called 'P2Purge' designed expressly for this: it'll unlock and erase the file hierarchy on a P2 card (leaving the folder structure and an empty LASTCLIP.TXT file), then eject it. It can also be set up to allow folder purging for on-disk copies of P2 cards.

Use at your own risk: no warranty of fitness or suitability; professional driver on closed course; files in mirror are bigger than they appear; P2Purge is not intended for the operation of nuclear reactors, air traffic control, avionics, medical equipment, or other life-critical systems; etc."

And if you're feeling especially technically competent, Adam still has his FXScript filters available; he mentions these every once in awhile in articles.

Premiere Pro 3.1 posted, with P2 support + Intel SSE4.1

The Premiere Pro 3.1 update has been posted on the Abobe site for Windows & Mac. This update adds Panasonic P2 MXF compatibility plus a few bug fixes. Note that P2 MXF support in AE is not included.

The update has been available via the Adobe Update Manager, which hasn't been showing updates for some people who used the public beta. Details on the release were posted here previously in AE & PremierePro's P2 support, 3.1 upgrade available.

Update: The EditBlog discusses Editing P2 media on Avid.

Update 2: Adobe has a Premiere Pro Update for Intel SSE4.1 on Adobe Labs, "In November 2007, Intel released the Penryn family of processors that support new instructions called SSE4.1. These processors are identified by the 45nm production technology and one example is the Intel Core2 Extreme Processor QX9650. These new instructions are very helpful for working with video data. This update is completely optional and is meant to be a preview of the optimization work that is currently under development for the next release of Premiere Pro."

AE & PremierePro's P2 support, 3.1 upgrade available

Dave Helmly has a text and video intro to PremierePro and P2 support: "With the new Premiere Pro CS3 and the 3.1 update , you can now natively Ingest, Edit, and Export the Panasonic P2 format. All you need to do is to shoot your video and simply drag, drop, and edit – it’s that easy. There is no need to transcode your video with an intermediate codec in order to use them on the timeline, and there are no AVI or Quicktime wrappers – just native P2 format." (originally posted 10/9/07)

Update: The 3.1 upgrade is only available in Help>Update as of 10-18-07. Some people who installed the CS3 beta are Not Getting Adobe Production Premium Updates automatically.

Premiere seems to only support P2 MXF, not AVC files (though there is the Elecard Converter Studio AVC Edition to convert AVCHD to HDV). According to Rod Harlan, the 3.1 upgrade "WILL support DVCPRO and DVCPROHD at all the frame rates and resolutions that the camera can create." There's more in Premiere's LiveDocs, and more on HD in general in this blog post Premiere Pro: more partners.

Meanwhile there's Final Cut Pro 6.0.1, now with AVCHD support. Oliver Peters noted that there should be yet another release soon: "AVC-I support in FCP was shown at IBC and will be in a release after Leopard ships. It may require a transcode to ProRes."

Dave Helmley adds info on AE: "The After Effects team officially announced support for Panasonic P2/MXF format at the IBC show in September. They are currently working on the next update for AE and it will include P2 support. They are planning to release the update [also for Apple's OS X Leopard -ry] before the end of the year. I am currently working on a new short video, which will show After Effects CS3 working with P2 footage."
